National Board Certification: Excellence in Education

At Alamogordo Public Schools, we take immense pride in our National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs), whose dedication to their profession sets a gold standard for education. National Board Certification is one of the highest professional achievements in teaching, symbolizing a teacher’s commitment to excellence and their relentless pursuit of improving student outcomes. With only about three percent of teachers nationwide earning this distinction, NBCTs are truly exceptional educators who make a measurable impact in the classroom and beyond.

Research consistently shows that students taught by NBCTs experience greater academic gains, equating to as much as an additional one to two months of instruction each year. APS values the expertise and leadership these accomplished teachers bring to our schools, enriching the learning environment for our students and serving as mentors to their colleagues. We are proud to celebrate all our National Board Certified Teachers for their dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to fostering academic excellence within our community.

What is National Board Certification?

National Board Certification represents a hallmark of teaching excellence and involves a rigorous process that ensures candidates demonstrate mastery of their craft. The process includes:

  • Commitment to Excellence: Candidates undergo a self-assessment of their teaching practices, reflecting on their strengths and areas for growth to enhance their impact on student learning.

  • Comprehensive Portfolio Submission: Teachers compile evidence of their teaching effectiveness, including classroom artifacts, student work samples, and reflective commentaries.

  • Challenging Assessment Center Exercises: Candidates engage in exercises that may include analyzing student work, responding to real-world teaching scenarios, and demonstrating subject matter expertise.

  • Five Core Propositions: Certification is rooted in core principles that define accomplished teaching, such as deep subject knowledge, the ability to manage and monitor student learning, and a commitment to ongoing professional growth.

  • Rigorous Evaluation: Trained assessors, who are accomplished educators themselves, evaluate candidates’ submissions to ensure certification is based on clear evidence of teaching excellence.

Alamogordo Public Schools celebrates the achievements of all our National Board Certified Teachers and their contributions to advancing education in our district. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for our students and community.
