Emergency Management and Preparation
Everyday Alamogordo Publics Schools is entrusted with our communities’ greatest resource, our children. Our district is committed to providing a safe and secure learning and working environment for our students and staff. Planning and preparation for school emergencies is critical to ensure the success of our students and staff.
Preparation for school emergencies is not only necessary but mandated by law. Every public school is required to conduct eight emergency drills annually. These drills include lock-down, shelter in place, evacuation and fire drills. Through these drills, staff and students learn the necessary steps needed to respond to school emergencies. In addition, all school personnel receive annual training in the emergency procedures for Alamogordo Public Schools.
The New Mexico Public Education Department mandates all school sites produce and maintain a Safe Schools Plan. This plan is submitted to the Public Education Department for audit, review and approval.
The plan must contain mandated information in five preparedness mission areas: Prevention,
Protection, Mitigation, Response and Recovery. The work and training performed within our school district plays an integral part in establishing a culture of awareness and preparedness that increase our schools’ ability to be both proactive and responsive when crisis situations arise.
Threats of Violence
Alamogordo Public Schools takes all threats of violence received seriously. Any information collected is reported to the appropriate Law Enforcement for investigation. Working with our Law Enforcement partners and reviewing the results of the investigation, a threat assessment is conducted to determine if the threat received is credible. As a precautionary measure extra security and law enforcement officers may be assigned on a school campus to ensure student safety when a threat is received.
Alamogordo Public Schools encourages the reporting of any information which may be perceived as a threat. Persons having information concerning any threat to a school facility, staff or student is urge to report the matter to the appropriate law enforcement agency or school administration.
