Alamogordo Public Schools (APS) is thrilled to announce the overwhelming success of its 3rd Annual Back to School Block Party held on Friday, July 26th, from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Hawaii Ave. complex. The event saw an estimated attendance of 3,000-4,000 people, making it the largest turnout yet. The Back to School Block Party, designed as a "one-stop-shop" for students and families, provided essential back-to-school information and access to invaluable community resources. Highlights of the event included free sports physicals offered in partnership with CHRISTUS Health, ensuring more students can participate in school sports regardless of financial constraints. Additionally, free backpacks, partially provided by For Otero, and school supplies, were distributed to students to ensure they have the necessary materials to start the school year successfully. Entertainment and fun was in full swing with a performance by the Alamogordo High School Tiger Band, giant Jenga and Connect Four games, and a variety of food trucks, including APS's own Fred the Food Truck. The ASTRO Vikings & Holloman Air & Space STEM Outreach captivated attendees with their demonstrations. Numerous APS departments were on-site, including Safety & Security, Student Nutrition, Human Resources, Teaching & Learning, Health Services, Special Education, and Transportation. Students had the opportunity to tour a school bus and meet the bus drivers, while parents and guardians could preregister with Raptor Technologies for school visits. Visitors to the Student Nutrition booth received August menus and learned about the free breakfast and lunch for all students, eliminating the need for an application.
